Ning, Part II

After thinking a bit more about Ning I've decided I shouldn't be too hasty with my assessments. After a bit more internal discussion TRYNT has officially decided to give it another go. Keep your eye on this blog for updates on our new Ning based project.

Ning + TRYNT = Ping Me Ning

Interesting stuff that Ning .. using it I was able to rapidly deploy a new mash-up, Ping Me Ning. Ping Me Ning is a meta-ping service that let's you quickly ping 1-18 of the most popular blog pinging services. While it was "fun" working with Ning I'm doubtful that I could deploy larger scale applications with the same ease, for that simple reason I think I'll be sticking with Odin Assemble.

Ning + TRYNT = ?

I've been reading a lot lately about Ning and after learning it was PHP based I've been itching to give it a try. So after a bit of discussion the TRYNT team has decided to develop a Ning based mash-up. As it progresses we will share our progress with you. Our intent is to combine Ning with various TRYNT Web Services.

About the TRYNT Audio CAPTCHA Web Service

The TRYNT Audio CAPTCHA Web Service, which is similar in many ways to our image based CAPTCHA web service, provides a simple mechanism for the generation of short audio verification WAV files. CAPTCHA audio files can be generated in both male and female voice variants and can contain up to 7 numbers.

The purpose of this web service is to provide handicap people with a mechanism for completing CAPTCHA tests. The idea was inspired by the handicap enabled CAPTCHA test used by Blogger.

New APIs

We've got a few new APIs just about ready for public consumption. Some interesting stuff IMHO including a new twist on CAPTCHA and a password integrity checker. We've also decided to revisit some older APIs such as the TRYNT HTML Converter Web Service.

Stay tuned for some fresh stuff kids!

A link from Dean Edwards

We just got a (imho) very cool link from Dean Edwards for the TRYNT JavaScript Compression Web Service. Why is it cool? Dean Edwards is the original author of the JavaScript compression engine used by our web service.

About the TRYNT PHP Compression Web Service

The TRYNT PHP Compression Web Service provides free PHP compression and obfuscation. Compression can reduce your storage requirements and obsfucation can make it harder to reverse engineer your code.

If you would like to test the API but don't have any PHP handy why not test it using the XML generation class XMLWriter, from Simon Willison. Click here to see the results.

About the TRYNT MP3 Details Web Service

The TRYNT MP3 Details Web Service provides easy access to the hidden ID3 metadata contained in most MP3 files. We envision this web service being useful for developers working on audio mash-ups.

The following link is an example of the MP3 archive details web service providing data for the following MP3 file.

We've made contact!

After a bit more work then I had actually expected TRYNT has made contact with the Odin Assemble team.

After commenting on the OA blog and subsequently exchanging a few quick emails we are happy to announce that TRYNT is an official Odin Assemble 3.0 beta test site!

Backlinkr now using TRYNT JavaScript Compression

According to an update on the homepage of BackLinkr, BackLinkr is now using the TRYNT JavaScript Compression API. Very cool.

If you haven't seen this service (or similar ones) yet, BackLinkr is a cut and paste widget that displays your latest back links. They are refering to these links as "impromtu testimonials" — what a clever marking pitch.

About the TRYNT Zip Details Web Service

The TRYNT Zip Details Web Service provides easy access to the hidden metadata and file information contained in any given zip archive.

The following link is an example of the zip details web service providing data for the following zip archive.

(Please note "zip" refers to compressed PK Zip archives, not postal codes.)

More link love for the TRYNT JavaScript Compression Web Service

I personally don't frequent all the various social news websites but I have been as of late because of the attention that the TRYNT JavaScript Compression Web Service is getting.

Here's a fresh link via Netscape!

My Timelines

My Timelines is a great new widget targetted directly at bloggers (but not limited to blogs). In the most simple terms My Timelines creates an AJAX based interactive timeline that your readers can drag horizontally to control the "view" - think Google Maps except we're dealing with time instead of geography.

It's very easy to install - simple cut and paste javascript.

We've already implemented a TRYNT timeline which is running on our homepage. It's a very unique/very cool navigation IMHO that can only add to a sites "stickyness." Great concept indeed!

About the TRYNT Image Details Web Service

The TRYNT Image Details Web Service provides easy access to the hidden EXIF metadata contained in any given image created by a modern digital camera.

New! While most EXIF data is written by digital cameras, some applications write to the following fields IPTC, COM and APP2. For those specific conditions the API will provide a raw dump for these fields.

To the right is an example image captured with a digital camera. You can use the TRYNT Image Details Web Service to view the associated metadata by clicking here.

More action on the JavaScript Compressor

I found this recent blog entry from the Alternate URL Ads blog that mentioned the TRYNT JavaScript Compression API. While we don't participate these types of advertising programs directly (ie Google AdSense, Chitika, etc) it is cool to see a service like Alternate URL Ads take advantage of our work.

More on the JS Compression Web Service

If you've gotten an error from the compression web service I encourage you to give it another run. I've up'd the memory permissions and as such we can process much larger files.

For those with an extra second on their hands, please email me details regarding the file size you tried to compress to info (at) trynt.com or post it here.

I personally hit some "limits" when tryint to compress the 55,150 byte Prototype library. Yikes! I think I may need to move the compression API to its own machine, but I guess I need to see how much if any utilization this web service

Metadata Galore !

Now that we've released our first metadata oriented web service it really started to sink in how much data was floating around unseen. We're almost done with our second metadata oriented web service, an EXIF details web service, so keep your eyes open for that soon.

Don't expect us to stop there either! The team is already hard at work on a few video metadata web services too.

About the TRYNT SWF Details Web Service

The TRYNT SWF/Flash Details Web Service provides easy access to the hidden metadata contained in any given Flash movie or SWF file. Exposed hidden metadata includes compression status, flash version, size, width, height, fps and total frames. File location and MD5 values are also provided.

Still curious? Click here to see this web service in action.

(If you're counting this is web service #16)

Another TRYNT mention

Yesterday TRYNT was mentioned here in the Odin Assemble blog. It appears they've noticed that we like the OA framework.

After reading a bit I realized they have a (brand new - still pretty empty) Odin Assemble Corporate blog that will be featuring "businesses that make Odin Assemble a core competency" - that sounds like TRYNT right? I'm going to drop them a line and see if I can't get TRYNT listed there as well.

Yikes! Fifteen Web Services

As I was putting together my blog entry for the day I realized that TRYNT is now offering fifteen unique public web services. What's more exciting is that we've got another five in development and nine others in the beta area right now!

I think it might be just about time to reorganize the API listing page.

Do you have a unique usage of a TRYNT web service? Then let us know - We're very curious!

About the TRYNT HTML Converter Web Service

The TRYNT HTML Converter Web Service provides free basic format conversion services from HTML to various other file formats. We are currently offering three formats, html clean1, html clean2 and ms doc, future forward we plan to add more file formats.

This API was created to offer developers methods for content normalization. We currently offer two versions of HTML cleaning or normalization. "html clean1" is based on an inhouse developed algorithm and "html clean2" is based on the PEAR HTML Safe package.

The "ms doc" format allows HTML to Microsoft Word conversions. Please note this is not a binary .doc file but rather a RTF version.

TRYNT gets a bit of digg.com coverage

It appears we've got a digg link to our new TRYNT Javascript Compression Web Service. I hope more people take notice because I'm very confident this API will provide value to lots and lots of people.

If you have a digg account then why not give our story a "digg" and help improve the visibility of TRYNT!

About the TRYNT Google Dance Web Service

We've added a second Google oriented web service to our blossoming library of free public APIs and web services. The first of course was our Google Pagerank Web Service.

Our second Google web service is the Google Dance Web Service. This service, however non-interactive, attempts to identify if a Google Dance is occuring at the moment of query. We do this by monitoring variations between known Google data centers we can provide a statistical value indicating the likelihood of a Google Dance being in progress. To accomplish this three values are monitored:

  • Backlinks
  • Indexed Pages
  • Search Results for a single query

A percentage value is returned for each along with an overall score.

We percieve value for developers in the field of SEO or search engine optimization.

About the TRYNT Google Pagerank Web Service

The TRYNT Google Pagerank Web Service provides easy access to the Google Pagerank value for any given web page.

JSON vs XML

Historically TRYNT Heavy Technologies has focused on the development of XML based web services and APIs. We've recently been informed of potential browse security issues that limit the usefulness of our existing line of APIs. (This can of course be avoided through the use of a local "proxy")

So we ask you, our loyal readers and api consumers, what do you prefer? Would you like to see more XML based APIs or would you like to see TRYNT move towards more JSON APIs? (Hey wait maybe you want both, damn your needy, well let us know!)

About the TRYNT Language Identification Web Service

The TRYNT Language Identification Web Service attempts to identify the language of any submitted string. This API currently recognizes the following sixteen languages:

  • Arabic
  • Belarus
  • Chinese
  • Czech
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English
  • Esperanto
  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Hebrew
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Russian
  • Spanish

Language identification is done through a statistical analysis. The returned results includes all potential language matches from the set of sixteen, each with a score indicating the likelihood that language matches your submitted string.

About the TRYNT Javascript Compression Web Service

The TRYNT Javascript Compression Web Service provides free JavaScript compression and obfuscation. Compressing JavaScript can improve the loading speed of your AJAX and JavaScript application as well as reduce your overall bandwidth usage. Obfuscating JavaScript serves to protect your code by making it harder to reverse engineer.

MovieReviewr, A TRYNT Mash-up

Movie Reviewer is a new mash-up from TRYNT, that helps you find the movie reviews you want to read before watching that movie in theaters now or new to dvd. Movie Reviewr uses a combination of info clouds and lists to display the "most reviewed" or "most talked about" films.

Movie Reviewr is made possible by the beta TRYNT Movie Review API. The API is still too rough around the edges for public consumption but look for it soon in the TRYNT APIs index.

PhoneBackr, A TRYNT Mashup

PhoneBackr is a "mash-up" that acts like a searchable reverse telephone directory, sometimes called the "Black Pages." In english this means if you give us a US based telephone number we will try to return associated details, pretty nifty eh?

PhoneBackr is not a real reverse phone lookup service but rather a simulated one. We simulate reverse phone lookups through the use of a beta TRYNT web service. We fully expect your mileage to vary and we do not guarantee the results of this tool.

TRYNT Betas

If you haven't seen our lovely TRYNT Betas area yet, the take a gander. In our beta area we feature the earliest versions of soon to be released public web services.

To add a bit of interactivity we've wrapped the entire set into self contained AJAX demos. Enjoy!

Stock Cloud

Stock Cloud, a product of Odin Metatech, attempts to identify "business partnerships" by data-mining press releases. They use an info cloud (similar to a tag cloud) to render the results.

"A Stock Cloud is a tag cloud like display of stock ticker symbols. The larger the ticker symbol the more frequent that company distributes press releases."

In addition to their info cloud displays Odin is also making good use of the Simile Timeline API to display the collecting press releases relative to their release dates.

Because the TRYNT Stock Symbol Lookup Web Service is used by Stock Cloud we feel it's a good real world example of the web service in action.

About the TRYNT Stock Symbol Lookup Web Service

The TRYNT Stock Symbol Lookup Web Service provides a convenient way to convert stock symbols into corresponding company names.

An interesting example of this web service in action can be seen at Stock Cloud.

About the TRYNT RPC Ping Web Service

The TRYNT RPC Ping Web Service gives you a single interface to ping up to 18 major third-party RPC ping services.

Please note if you attempt to ping all 18 services it may take a few moments to complete the entire action. We are currently rehashing the system design to include a queing system to remedy this issue.
